The consortium is composed of four research institutions and one SME that holds together a very high potential for an optimal implementation of the proposed project:

  • Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Centre of Migration Research of The University of Warsaw
  • UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre
  • Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology
  • German Aerospace Center

Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN) is the leading Polish institution in the field of space research and its applications in geosciences and technology development. It was established in 1977 as a research institute with its activity directed towards terrestrial space, the Solar System and the Earth observation using space technology and satellite techniques.

CBK PAN has participated in numerous space science missions and UE programmes. The institute collaborates with more than 100 research institutions from all over the world. Currently CBK PAN employs around 200 people including research and administrative staff. CBK PAN’s researchers developed more than 210 projects and published around 350 papers in scientific journals in last 5 years. The Earth Observation Department (Zespół Obserwacji Ziemi - ZOZ) activity is focused on processing of satellite images and developing GIS applications and were involved in numerous projects with a focus on both optical and radar image analysis and classification that were founded from national, European and ESA sources. Main topics of activity include land cover/use classification and change detection developing algorithms with an use of multisource data, e.g. automatic change detection in urban and suburban areas, automatic object extraction, developing new land cover descriptors, natural hazards assessment (forest fires and floods) and climatological studies focusing on cloud and snow monitoring. In addition, ZOZ has experience in quality control, quality assurance and verification of EO-based and GIS mapping products proven in the international projects.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aerospace research center of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development activities in aviation, space, energy, transportation, and security are integrated into national and international collaborations. It supports the ECO-ARISE project through its Center for Satellite-Based Crisis Information (ZKI). The ZKI’s core competence lies in the rapid acquisition, processing, and analysis of remote sensing data, such as satellite, aerial, or other geospatial data, as well as the provision of up-to-date situational information derived from these data regarding natural and environmental disasters or for humanitarian relief efforts. The close integration of research, development, and application is a major strength of the ZKI.

Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT) was founded in 2019 as an affiliated institute of Heidelberg University. Institute conducts research and development relating to geographic information, for the benefit of the environment and society. The institute places particular emphasis on using open source geodata contributed by volunteers to incorporate local perspectives. Results and data are made freely available to stakeholders such as researchers, non-profit organizations and public institutions. The team is primarily dedicated to four key areas: Smart Mobility, Big Spatial Data Analytics, Geoinformation for Humanitarian Aid, Climate Action.

The UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre, established on 17 September 1991, is a member of the GRID (Global Resource Information Database) network, established by the UN Environment (United Nations Environment Programme – UNEP) to foster sustainable management of natural resources.

We are one of the few specialised centres in charge of collecting, processing, and facilitating access to data and information about the natural environment, as well as promoting application of spatial data and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Officially registered as an NGO (the branch of the National Foundation for the Environmental Protection in Poland), we cooperate with many national and international partners – local authorities, educational entities and companies implementing CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policies.

The University of Warsaw (UW) is the largest and according to the latest Shanghai Ranking the best higher education establishment in Poland - among the top 3% of the world’s best universities. The Centre of Migration Research (CMR) is a leading interdisciplinary inter-faculty research unit of the University of Warsaw, specializing in studies on migration processes in Poland and in Europe.

60 researchers are currently affiliated with the CMR; among them 10 Professors, 32 researchers holding a PhD degree and 18 persons with a MA degree. Within the group, researchers with sociological and economic backgrounds predominate but such fields as demography, political science, administrative law, social anthropology and cross-cultural psychology are also represented.

Academic and research activities were the main goal of the CMR since the origins. The Centre has been involved in a number of migration projects (varying in scale), funded by national and international sources. To date, the largest and most significant scientifically projects conducted by the CMR include: IDEA – Mediterranean and Eastern European Countries as new immigration destinations in the European Union (consortium of eleven institutions from nine countries, co-funded by 6 Framework Program), Mobility and Migrations at the Time of Transformation – Methodological Challenges (MWM, co-funded by EEA Financial Mechanism), Migration Policy and Labour Market Change (MPLM Project, co-funded by the European Social Fund). Throughout the years, around 50 research projects have been finalised, of a total budget of approximately 1.25 million euro (excluding individual and advisor grants).
